No self-respecting British Christmas dinner would be complete without Christmas crackers! A beloved tradition, crackers date back to about 1845 when a confectioner got the idea to wrap sweets as love tokens. They weren't that popular until he added a snap, then they quickly became a celebration staple.

When the crackers are pulled - with a satisfying bang! - a paper crown, a toy or gift, a hokey joke and a conversation starter falls out. The crowns are thought to symbolize the crowns worn by the Wise Men, and one of the hallmarks of a true British dinner is that everyone wears theirs through the meal. (If everyone wears them, no one looks silly!)

Bonus points: Although each person gets one, crackers are meant to be pulled open by two people, one on each end - a great way to get the conversation going and the electronic devices put away!
